Mixing Watercolor Paint with Water

You may choose to first drain some of the excess water into the palette cup by brushing against its lip. Then spread the tip of the brush into the paint to transfer the water into the mix. Use the brush to work the mixture into an even thickness. You’ll notice that the paint will begin to look more translucent. As you work, the paint will change from having the consistency of heavy cream to having the consistency of whole milk. The water will lighten the color of the paint.

Dip the brush into the cup of water and swirl it around the cup to clean the paint off the bristles. Wipe down the bristles of the brush with a rag to remove any remaining paint. Rewet brush as need. Afterwards, use your fingers to reshape the bristles before putting aside. NOTE: the fully clean your brushes after each session, run them under the tap and use your fingers to work out any pigment that might be lodged in around the metal ferrule.
