A sound in nature is essentially a vibration that passes through the air. These vibrations are not unlike a ripple on a lake. Louder noises make larger ripples, quiet noises make hardly a stir. The intensity of the impact will define the spreed (frequency) of the ripples as they move away from the impact.

Our ear is designed to act like a surface of that water - responding to sound pressure by vibrating sympathetically. We call this type of device a transducer. Microphone diaphragms are one kind of transducer. Speakers are another. Both are called analog devices because they record continuous streams of information.
